Seat cover or reupholstery? The difference that saves you paying twice
People come in asking for a cover when they need reupholstery, and others pay for a full interior when a cover would have done The difference is not price but what each one actually repairs — and one sign settles it before you spend anything
The practical difference
A cover is cut to the seat and fitted over the original upholstery without stripping it
Reupholstery is removing the old skin and building a new surface on the seat itself
The distinction that matters: a cover conceals, upholstery repairs
While the fault is in the surface alone, a cover solves it. The moment the fault sits underneath the surface, nothing laid over the top will help
The sign that settles it: press with your hand
What we see most often is a customer asking for a cover while the foam underneath has collapsed
That is the mistake that costs twice: the cover goes on over dead foam, the seat returns to its old shape within months, and the owner comes back to pay for the reupholstery he needed in the first place
The test needs no expertise: press your palm into the middle of the seat and lift it
• The foam springs straight back → the surface alone is the problem and a cover is enough
• It stays sunken or returns slowly → the foam is finished and no cover will fix it
The first seat to lose its foam is always the driver seat, because it is the only one carrying the same weight every single day
Which is why you find cars with a perfect back row and a driver seat that leans
What Eastern Province sun does to leather
The first thing to fail in Dammam cars is leather cracked by the sun — we see it every day
Heat pulls the oils out of the leather, it dries, it loses its give, and hairline cracks appear that widen every time somebody sits down
It is never even: the parts facing the glass go first — the seat next to the window, the edges of the dashboard, the top of the seat back
Which is why you see one cracked seat in a car and the rest untouched
A hairline crack does not hold still: every sitting opens it a little further until it splits
So if the leather has cracked but not yet torn, and the foam underneath is sound, a cover protects what is left and stops the spread
If it has already torn, a cover hides the tear without stopping it — the split widens underneath and its shape prints through
A ready-made cover is not a fitted cover
The most common misconception we hear: that ready-made is the same as fitted
It is not, and the difference shows the moment it goes on, not a year later
A ready-made cover is built to an approximate size meant to suit "most cars", so it leaves gaps at the edges and ripples at the curves
The rippling is not a cosmetic issue: fabric that wrinkles and slides with every sitting rubs against the original upholstery and wears it away — the cover you bought to protect your interior is slowly eating it
A fitted cover is measured off your own seat, cut, and fitted tight, so it follows the seat lines and does not slide
Which means: if your reason for buying a cover is to protect the original upholstery, a ready-made one works against you
And if you are planning to sell
A buyer lifts the cover and looks underneath — always
So a cover hides nothing at resale, but it does preserve the original upholstery if it went on early and was fitted properly
If the interior has genuinely gone, a full reupholstery reads in the price
The reason is that partial work leaves visible mismatch: one renewed seat beside an old one, doors and headliner in a third shade
When every piece is cut from a single batch of material that mismatch disappears — and that is what makes an interior read as original rather than patched
The verdict in three lines
Press the seat: foam springs back → a fitted cover is enough Stays sunken, or the leather has torn → reupholstery, and a cover here only postpones it Parts at visibly different ages → a full interior from one batch of material We do not sell you what you do not need: the inspection is free and we press the foam in front of you and tell you which one it is
